Messages App Bug. Hi all, When I get a Message on my month-old MacBook Air, I'll get the notification and the little red dot indicator on the dock icon appears, but there's no message in the actual app. I have to quit and restart the app in order to see it. Also, if I send a message, it MIGHT go through, but I won't be able to see it until. The Mac App Store in OS X is Apple's central location for software distribution and updates, and also replaces Software Update as the service for managing OS patches and upgrades.

What you need to know

  • A macOS photo bug that added empty data to all of your photo files was discovered earlier this week.
  • Turns out that it may actually be affecting more than just Image Capture.
  • A new report states the same issue is also impacting nearly all Mac apps that import photos from external devices.

A macOS bug which adds empty data to imported photos may be much more widespread than previously thought.

Earlier this week a bug discovered by NeoFinder was found to be adding 1.5MB of empty data to photo files that were imported using macOS' Image Capture application.

Now, a new report from MacRumors suggests the bug may actually be affecting many more apps. From the piece:

NeoFinder developer Norbert Doerner, who originally discovered the bug, informed MacRumors that the same issue affects nearly all Mac apps that import photos from cameras and iOS devices, including Adobe Lightroom, Affinity Photo, PhaseOne Media Pro, and Apple's legacy iPhoto and Aperture apps.

It looks like the bug is actually a problem with Apple's ImageCaptureCore framework, which is used by all the aforementioned apps to connect digital cameras to Mac. As the report notes, only Apple's Photos app doesn't use it.

As mentioned, the bug seems to be adding 1.5MB of empty data to imported photos for no apparent reason, causing photos to take up more space than they otherwise should. Whilst 1.5MB doesn't sound like a lot, NeoFinder's Norbert Doerner discovered 12,000 JPG photos affected by the problem, enough photos to take up 20GB of extra storage space.

The bug is reportedly affecting macOS 10.14.6 later. MacRumors notes that Apple 'is apparently aware of the bug' however there is no indication as to when a patch might be released. There offered workaround is as follows:

one short term workaround for future transfers is to prevent your iPhone or iPad from using the HEIF format when taking photos: To do so, launch the Settings app, select Camera -> Formats and check Most Compatible.

A utility called Graphic Converter can also apparently be used to remove the rogue data from existing photo libraries.

For the second time in three months, some apps that rely on Facebook's developer tools to log users in to their accounts are crashing on launch. Update: Facebook claims to have resolved the issue.

Os Bug 5880648

Developers are reporting that multiple apps have again been affected by a problem in the Facebook SDK which they use to streamline the process of logging users in or allow sharing of content. Reports vary, but the problem appears to have begun around 6:20 a.m. ET.

This is the same process that has previously proved controversial because of user's data being sent to Facebook, but the apps affected now appear to solely be using the SDK's login process. Reportedly, the apps affected include high-profile ones such as Spotify, SoundCloud, Waze, Imgur, and TikTok.

'We are aware and investigating an increase in errors on the iOS SDK which is causing some apps to crash,' said Facebook in a statement posted to the company's developer forums. The problem appears to have begun affecting apps around

The crashes are not consistent, with other users reporting no problems. However, developer Alex Karimov is among those filing bug reports with Facebook and says many users are affected. 'Currently we have 2K+ crashes on all products that use Facebook SDK and application is still crashing,' he said in the forum.

In the same discussion thread, developer Hellen Smith reports that 'it seems to have spiked and receded, with a few 'aftershocks'.' Smith and Karimov are among many developers asking Facebook to roll back its software to a point before the crashes began.

A previous, and seemingly similar, bug in May 2020 was resolved by Facebook within around two hours, and saw the majority of affected apps restored soon after.

Using Facebook's SDK is generally an easier process for developers than each implementing their own login and user authentication process. It's similar to the newer 'Sign in With Apple,' although Facebook's SDK is dramatically wider used than that.
