You may notice that blue dots appear next to some of your apps. And you may wonder why these blue dots appear sometime and what does that mean?

I have just noticed on my friends device (running iOS7) blue dots next to the app name on the home screen. I have done some research and found that these now replace the 'new' banner in iOS6 as well as apps that have been updated but not opened yet.

These blue dots may appear next to some apps (left side of the app name – under the app icon, as you can see below) on the home screen or inside folders. This shows that apps with blue dots have recently been updated. In other words, when an app is updated (automatically or manually), little blue dots will appear next to the app name indicating that your app just updated.

All apps releases updates on a regular basis. These updates may include new features or they may include bug fixes. Thus, you may want to update apps. Sometimes, an app will not work until you update. To update your iOS apps, you have two options:

1. You can manually update the apps. You need to do this by opening the App Store app on your iPad or iPhone and then tap Updates. You can update the apps individually or you can update apps in bulk by tapping “Update All”.
2. You can automatically update your apps. You can turn on or off this option. To enable automatic app updates, simply go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores > and then toggle on “Updates” (under the automatic updates section). If this option is grayed out and not available, that is because your iPhone or iPad is in Low Power Mode. You may want to charge your device and you may want to turn off Low Power Mode by going to Settings > Battery > and turn off “Low Power Mode”.

The blue dot will be removed after you open the app for the first time after an update. Also please note that, currently, there is no way to stop these blue dots for updated apps. Please also note that you may want to update apps over a Wi-Fi connection to avoid data charges, also note that cellular data downloads are limited to 150MB. If an update is bigger that 150MB, you will have to use a Wi-Fi connection. Lastly, if you do not want to automatically update your apps over your cellular network, you can turn this off by going to Settings > iTunes & App Stores and toggle off “Use Cellular Data”.

How to find the Markup editor in the Photos app

Markup is a bit hidden in the Photos app. Here's how you can find it and start editing!

1. Launch the Photos app from your dock.
2. Double-click on the photo you would like to edit.
3. Click Edit in the upper right corner of the Photos window.
4. Click the more button on the upper right of the photos window. It's a circle with three dots in it.

5. Click Markup.

6. You can now make your markup edits on your photo.
7. Click Save Changes on the top right of the window when you're happy. Your edited photo will appear in your library.

How to draw on your photos with the Markup editor

Add your own shapes and flair to your photos by doodling a little! If you draw certain shapes, they will also re-form into a cleaner cut version of that shape. Try drawing stars, hearts, arrows, and more!

1. Launch the Photos app from your dock.
2. Double-click on the photo you would like to edit.
3. Click Edit in the upper right corner of the Photos window.
4. Click the more button on the upper right of the photos window. It's a circle with three dots in it.

5. Click Markup.

6. Click and drag on the photo to draw or write on it.

7. Click Save Changes on the top right of the window if you're happy with your markup. Remember that this will save changes to the original photo. You can, however go back into Markup and remove your markup, but it's best to make a copy of the original and mark it up.

You can now draw and add your doodles to your photo.

How to change the thickness or texture of your lines with the Markup editor

1. Launch the Photos app from your dock.
2. Double-click on the photo you would like to edit.
3. Click Edit in the upper right corner of the Photos window.
4. Click the more button on the upper right of the photos window. It's a circle with three dots in it.

5. Click Markup.

6. Click the Shape Style button. It looks like three horizontal lines that get bigger.
7. Select the thickness or the texture you would like to use.

8. Click Save Changes on the top right of the window when you're happy. Your edited photo will appear in your library.

You can then go about drawing or writing on your photo.

How to change the color of your lines with the Markup editor

1. Launch the Photos app from your dock.
2. Double-click on the photo you would like to edit.
3. Click Edit in the upper right corner of the Photos window.
4. Click the more button on the upper right of the photos window. It's a circle with three dots in it.

5. Click Markup.

6. Click the Text Style button, which looks like an uppercase A.
7. Click the colored bar.
8. Click a color to select it.

9. Click Save Changes on the top right of the window when you're happy. Your edited photo will appear in your library.

Then go about drawing or writing on your photo.

How to add shapes to your photos with the Markup editor

You can either draw your shapes, or add them to your photo with just a few simple clicks. You can also adjust the color and size/shape of the image by clicking and dragging to edit.

1. Launch the Photos app from your dock.
2. Double-click on the photo you would like to edit.
3. Click Edit in the upper right corner of the Photos window.
4. Click the more button on the upper right of the photos window. It's a circle with three dots in it.

5. Click Markup.

6. Click the Shapes button from the menu. It's next to the pen button.
7. Click the shape you would like to select. It will automatically be added to your photo.
8. Click and drag the blue dots to adjust the shape until you're happy with how it looks.

9. Click Save Changes on the top right of the window when you're happy. Your edited photo will appear in your library.

How to add a border to your photos with the Markup editor

Add a faint black or a colored border to your images to switch up your regular editing routine!

1. Launch the Photos app from your dock.
2. Double-click on the photo you would like to edit.
3. Click Edit in the upper right corner of the Photos window.
4. Click the more button on the upper right of the photos window. It's a circle with three dots in it.

5. Click Markup.

6. Click the Shapes button in the menu. It looks like a square and circle.
7. Click the rectangle inside a rectangle option at the bottom left of the menu.
8. Click and drag the blue dots to adjust the borders to your liking.

9. Click Save Changes on the top right of the window when you're happy. Your edited photo will appear in your library.

How to adjust border color with the Markup editor

1. Launch the Photos app from your dock.
2. Double-click on the photo you would like to edit.
3. Click Edit in the upper right corner of the Photos window.
4. Click the more button on the upper right of the photos window. It's a circle with three dots in it.

5. Click Markup.

6. Click the Shapes button on the left of the menu. It looks like a square and circle.
7. Click the rectangle inside a rectangle option at the bottom left of the menu that appears.
8. Click the Fill Color button. It's a white square with a red line through it.
9. Click the color you would like your border to be. Your border will automatically become that color.

10. Click Save Changes on the top right of the window when you're happy. Your edited photo will appear in your library.

How to add a callout to your photos with the Markup editor

Callouts are a great way to add an emphasis to a certain area of your photo. Markup editor makes adding callouts easy-peasy, rending the use of a third-party editing app useless. Here's how to use them in the Photos app!

1. Launch the Photos app from your dock.
2. Double-click on the photo you would like to edit.
3. Click Edit in the upper right corner of the Photos window.
4. Click the more button on the upper right of the photos window. It's a circle with three dots in it.

5. Click Markup.

6. Click the Shapes button on the left side of the menu. It's a square and circle.
7. Click the callout button on the bottom right of the menu that appears. It looks like a lowercase 'a' with a circle around it.
8. Click and drag the blue dot to adjust the size of the callout.
9. Click and drag the green dot to adjust the magnification.

10. Click Save Changes on the top right of the window when you're happy. Your edited photo will appear in your library.

How to add text to your photos with the Markup editor

Adding a little bit of text can be a really great way to edit without cluttering up your photo with additional bells and whistles.

You can also change your font type and color to match the rest of the photo better.

1. Launch the Photos app from your dock.
2. Double-click on the photo you would like to edit.
3. Click Edit in the upper right corner of the Photos window.
4. Click the more button on the upper right of the photos window. It's a circle with three dots in it.

5. Click Markup.

6. Click the Text button. It looks like an uppercase 'T' in a box.
7. Click inside the text box to type in it.
8. Click and drag the blue dots to change the size of the text box.

9. Click Save Changes on the top right of the window when you're happy. Your edited photo will appear in your library.

8. Click the font name and click a font to change it.
9. Click the colored bar and click a color to choose your text color.

10. Click Save Changes on the top right of the window when you're happy. Your edited photo will appear in your library.

In this menu, you can also adjust font size, alignment, and bold, italics, and underlining.
